For their runway show at Paris Fashion Week 2023, the Danish fashion brand Rains approached 3D printed footwear manufacturer Zellerfeld to realize a radically new sneaker design. The shoe was to be designed as if sculpted by a stream of water, mixed with the aesthetic of an ancient artefact. To achieve this, Zellerfeld developed a new technique of generating big volumes with low density that would be flexible and puffy. This allowed for an oversized shoe to remain light weight. The shoe is internally separated into multiple areas of printing density. The low-density puffer zone sits above the high-density midsole, supporting the foot. Both are enclosed by a medium-density shell, providing a balance of flexibility and durability. The sneaker is made of TPU rubber filament.
